Puerto Deportivo Tomas Maestre: Leisure Oasis in La Manga

Have you ever heard of La Manga Del Mar Menor? This destination, located in the region of San Javier in Murcia, Spain, is well-known for being ideal for water sports, thanks to its unique location between the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor.

Due to the calm waters and favorable winds, the narrow stretch of land offers ideal conditions for activities such as sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. In addition, it is very popular with people looking for beaches on their vacations.

With this in mind, the region has developed a very complete infrastructure with many marinas. One is Puerto Deportivo Tomás Maestre, located at the northern end of La Manga. It is the largest marina in the area and one of the largest and best-equipped in the Mediterranean. The port offers a wide range of services and easy access to both the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean via the Estacio Canal.

On my trip to La Manga, I had the opportunity to get to know and enjoy the entire structure of the port, and today, I will share a little of the experience with you.

Brief History of Puerto Tomas Maestre

In the 1850s, the area of La Manga Del Mar Menor became private property, with the influential Maestre family acquiring much of the land in the north.

The person responsible for transforming La Manga into its current status as a popular tourist destination is Tomás Maestre Aznar, born in 1925. In 1956, he successfully persuaded his uncle to transfer the rights to the northern part of La Manga, allowing him to embark on his own venture in the area. With the help of Manuel Fraga, who served as Minister of Tourism during General Franco’s regime, Aznar began his development efforts in 1961.

It was with this support from the central government that La Manga was able to establish itself as a thriving tourist center.

The initial proposals for this transformation were given the green light between 1966 and 1968. As a result, the region of La Manga del Mar Menor gradually evolved into its current form, characterized by many beachfront developments, bungalows, shopping centers, and restaurants.

Founded in the 1970s, Puerto Deportivo Tomás Maestre grew into one of the main Mediterranean marinas. Situated at the north end of La Manga, this vast facility offers more than 1,800 boat berths and various services, including—but not limited to—sailing schools, boat rentals, restaurants, and shops. The port is accessed through Canal del Estacio, which links Mar Menor to the Mediterranean, thus facilitating easy and quick access for sailors.

Windsurfing Murcia: Best Spots

Windsurfing is one of the most attractive sports for those looking for adrenaline. However, many factors need to be considered in order to practice it, including the equipment used, the place, and the climate conditions. Good winds and a clean space without many tourists bathing are must-haves for a good experience with windsurfing.

Murcia, Spain, is one of the best places to find these and have a great experience, whether as beginners or experienced windsurfers. There are various stunning beaches around the region of La Manga and Mar Menor that are considered paradise for watersports fans.

Here, we will show you everything you need to know for the perfect experience when windsurfing at any beach in the region of La Manga. This guide will include the best spots, when to visit the beach, and everything you need for the best vacation ever, whether you’re a beginner in the surfing world or an experienced professional with the board.

Here’s what you need to know about windsurfing in Murcia:

Table of Contents

Is Windsurfing in Murcia for Everyone?

picture of multiple people windsurfing together

As we mentioned, Murcia offers the perfect sport experience for all kinds of people, from beginners to experienced surfers. However, some aspects should be considered, especially if it’s your first time with a windsurfing board.

Taking children to do this sport is not recommended as it can be dangerous, especially depending on the beach of your choice. They can have strong winds and waves that can give a tough time even to the more experienced divers.

Some schools and equipment rental companies offer options for kids and teenagers, including body suits, boards, and everything else you need to enjoy your activities in the water. Remember to always be careful and keep an eye on your kids if you plan on taking them to the activity with you.

What You Need for Windsurfing

image of two windsurf boards

As you know, windsurfing is an extreme sport that requires proper equipment and preparation. Whether you want to sail the sea and have casual fun in the water or you’re an experienced enthusiast looking for the best way to experience it, finding the right equipment and following the recommendations are always important.

First, you’ll need a board and a sail attached to it. The sails use the force of the wind to keep you moving in the water and gain speed to travel across waves and the water.

It is also strongly recommended to use a proper suit. It is the same suit you use to dive or practice other watersports, like scuba diving or kitesurfing, for example.

They not only help preserve body temperature in the water, which is essential, especially in the winter, but they also protect you from the sun’s UV light, which can be very high during summer. This makes them a must-have during all seasons for both enthusiasts and professionals. Don’t forget to take sunscreen with you to avoid sun damage.

Best Beaches for Enjoying Windsurf

image of a person windsurfing at the beach

As we mentioned, Murcia is the perfect area for windsurfing and for finding fun things to do during your trip. But which beaches are the best ones for the sport and have the best water conditions?

Here, we will answer those questions and give you some life-saving tips for the best experience. Make sure to take a look at each one, and you’ll surely embark on an unforgettable vacation.

Darsena de Dos Mares

image of Darsena de Dos Mares beach

Located in the famous region of La Manga, Dársena de Dos Mares is one of the best beaches for those looking for soft sand on their feet and agitated sea to practice extreme sports.

The place features a gorgeous view of the area’s natural beauty, and the shore is perfect to begin to learn the basics of standing on a board.

The farther you go, the bigger the waves you’ll find, being an excellent option for all levels of skills when it comes to windsurfing or any other sport of this kind. It’s a great option and is near many different beaches in the area, so you can always find something new to do. It is also near the center of Cartagena, which can be very helpful when taken into account.

Los Alcázares

image of Los Alcazares in Murcia

Los Alcázares might be the perfect place if you’re a beginner in windsurfing and are looking for a school or course to learn more about the sport. This place is very sought-after because the waters are calmer than La Manga and because it has some of the best schools for teaching watersports.

But that’s not the only reason this beach is a must-go in Spain. It is also one of the most gorgeous, and you’ll find everything you need to spend the day without going anywhere else. Food, drinks, activities, and everything here are perfect for tourists of all ages and profiles, whether they want to spend an hour or the entire day on the beach.

It is one of the best destinations for the sport and our personal recommendation if you’re visiting Murcia. I had an incredible time there and will definitely go back on my next vacation in Spain.

Puerto de Mazarrón

picture of Puerto de Mazarron in Spain

Our last suggestion is another of the most visited places in Murcia, with stunning views and a variety of activities that you won’t find anywhere else. The place is a reference for boat cruising and water activities, so it is no surprise that it is also one of the most attractive places for windsurfers.

It also has one of the most active nightlife in the entire country, so whether you choose to spend the day at the beach or enjoy the lights during the evening, this place will offer you infinite possibilities of what to do and where to go. The best part is that it is also close to Cartagena, so you can take a quick ride and see all the places listed above without having to travel long distances.

But what really attracts people to Puerto de Mazarrón are the courses available in every corner of the coast. If you’re a beginner and want to learn more about the sport, this is the place to stay. There are dozens of courses available, including some of the most complete ones that can turn people into experienced windsurfers in a few weeks.

Windsurfing School and Activity Suggestions

picture of multiple boards in the sand at the beach

Don’t know where to start when visiting Mar Menor for windsurfing? Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Whether you just want to rent equipment to practice the sport or take complete lessons to get better at this incredible activity, there’s always the perfect place in Murcia for that.

Here are our favorite ones and the main details you need to know:

Los Alcazares 5-Day Course

Los Alcazares Beach offers one of the best course options if you’re a beginner and want to learn more about the basics. Right at the coast, you can find a 5-day course that will take you through all the basics and make you improve in every aspect. It is more indicated for beginners as they teach the more fundamental aspects of the sport and don’t sail in strong winds.

Prepare for ten hours in the water, learning everything you need to start becoming a professional windsurfer. The course works on a 2-hour basis, totalizing the ten hours after five days. The starting hour and the dates will depend on the weather conditions. The total price is 90 euros per person, and you can check the official page of the activity to learn more about it.

Jaws School

Jaws School is another great option for beginners and intermediate surfers looking for help improving their abilities. It is one of the main watersports schools in Murcia and is located in San Pedro del Pinatar, a famous tourist spot in Spain.

The prices vary depending on the level, sport, and time and can go from 90 to 150 euros per person. You can also check their website to check the availability of the lessons.

Equipment Rental in La Manga

If you only need the equipment instead of complete lessons, La Manga has the perfect alternative. The rental store is in the middle of the region, and you can take it to any beach on the coast. It’s the perfect deal if you want to enjoy the Mediterranean winds and landscapes using professional equipment.

The rental costs 18 euros per board and gives you the right to use the equipment for 60 minutes. You can always rent it for more time as long as there are no reserves and the equipment is available.

Playa Del Barco Perdido, in Murcia, Spain

Discover the Enchanting Playa Del Barco Perdido

Playa Del Barco Perdido is one of the most famous beaches in the La Manga region, located in the province of Murcia, Spain. This beach combines natural beauty, modern amenities, and a relaxing atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for tourists and locals.

It was definitely one of the beaches I liked the most in the region when I visited it. In this article, we will explore its features and the various leisure and gastronomic options the region offers.

Table of Contents:

Understand The Region

Many people get confused about what La Manga del Mar Menor is and how it works.

La Manga is located southeast of the Iberian Peninsula in the Region of Murcia. It is a strip of coastline 21 km long and between 100 and 1200 meters wide, stretching from Cabo de Palos to the Salinas Natural Park in San Pedro del Pinatar.

La Manga is a popular destination for tourists looking for diverse beaches and clear waters. The beaches facing the Mar Menor offer calm, shallow, and warm waters, ideal for families and quiet water sports. The beaches facing the Mediterranean Sea have slightly stronger waves and are perfect for activities such as surfing and sailing.

Playa Del Barco Perdido

The Playa del Barco Perdido lies in the southernmost stretch of sand on the Mediterranean shore of La Manga del Mar.

Description

The beach is located within the jurisdiction of the Cartagena municipality and is so long that it is divided into three different sections. Due to its grandeur, it is divided into 3 “sectors” (each one with around 1800 meters of width): Playa de las Sirenas, Playa Entremares, and Playa Zeus. Each of these sections offers a unique experience for visitors:

  • Playa Entremares: It is the busiest and most popular at the entrance to La Manga.
  • Playa de las Sirenas: This section is known for its tranquility and clear waters, ideal for families and those seeking a quieter environment. In this section, the reason for the beach’s name lies in a shipwreck measuring almost 40 m long, just a few meters from the coast.
  • Playa Zeus: The southernmost section is less crowded and perfect for those seeking a little more privacy. It runs down to the border with the Gola de Marchamalo, the southernmost of the channels that permit the course of water between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean.

Climate

The climate in La Manga is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can range between 25°C and 35°C, while winter temperatures rarely drop below 10°C. The region receives a significant amount of sunshine throughout the year, making it a popular holiday destination all year round. I was there in the middle of summer, and the weather was hot (but pleasant) every day. There were a few days when it rained in the late afternoon, but it was a very quick shower and a bit refreshing.

Amenities

As this is a very busy area, especially in summer, the three sections are very well structured in terms of services, having even received a Q Quality award in recognition of the services offered. There are three lifeguard stations spread across the beaches and three different Civil Protection points that offer medical and bathing assistance to the disabled.

Facilities on the sand include foot showers, sun loungers rentals, water sports equipment rentals such as jet skis, wooden walkways on the beach, bins, recycling collection points, and a children’s play area. Visitors can also count on a lifeguard and a first aid point manned in summer.

Accessibility

The La Manga area is very inclusive and accessible. At Playa Del Barco Perdido (and at almost all the other beaches), parking spaces are reserved for people with reduced mobility, and access for these bathers is clearly signposted.

On the beach itself, there is a dedicated module for people with disabilities that provides adapted toilets, changing rooms, and shade, and an amphibious bathing chair is also available for use, with the assistance of volunteers from Civil Protection.

Where To Eat Nearby Playa Del Barco Perdido

Eating out at Playa Del Barco Perdido is very easy. The La Manga region has many restaurants and bars for all tastes and budgets. There are options on the beach itself, mainly Chiringuitos (kisoques). One that I really liked was Chiringuito Odesa Beach. Some of them offer, in addition to food and drinks, services such as chairs and umbrellas for customers who choose to eat on-site.

You can also find restaurants like El Parador del Mar Menor, Maloca, and Bonobo Playa. These restaurants are popular with tourists and are famous in the region as they have many positive online reviews. They offer Mediterranean dishes, Spanish cuisine, and seafood.

Bonobo Playa, in particular, is on Playa Del Barco Perdido (The other listed above, you might need a way of locomotion to get to). The restaurant is incredible, with a friendly, knowledgeable staff and good food. But the best of all, without a doubt, is eating with a view of this incredible beach!

Another option, next to Bonoboo, is Surfing. I want to highlight their cocktails, each one better than the last. This restaurant is also famous in the region and has many positive reviews online.

Leisure In The Playa Del Barco Perdido Region

In addition to enjoying Playa Del Barco Perdido, the La Manga region is well-known for its many leisure options. Some of the options include:

Water Sports

The region is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, and diving are some of the most popular activities, and no matter which beach you’re on, you’ll find a company offering equipment rentals or sports lessons.

Club Nautico La Isleta is a popular destination (and very close to Playa Del Barco Perdido) for water sports enthusiasts. The club offers various services for visitors, including sailing, windsurfing, and paddle surfing. In addition, it has modern facilities such as a marina, restaurant, and leisure areas, providing a complete and enjoyable experience for the whole family.

Boat Trips And Tours

Exploring the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean via boat trips is a fantastic way to appreciate the region’s natural beauty.

Companies normally offer tours to places such as Isla Grosa, Isla Perdiguera, Isla del Barón, Cabo Roig, Cabo de Palos, Calblanque Natural Park, Cala Reona, and Playa de Pudrimel.

Isla del Ciervo

Isla del Ciervo is a small and charming island in the Mar Menor. It is a popular destination for hiking and boating, offering trails that provide panoramic views of the lagoon and coastline. The island is an excellent spot for bird-watching and for those looking for a peaceful escape in nature.

Cabo de Palos

Cabo de Palos is a picturesque coastal town kissing the Mediterranean Sea; it extends along one side to an untainted coastline leading towards Cartagena.

Less than 4 kilometers away, it boasts fame for its marine reserve, historic lighthouse (an ideal spot for cool photos), and favorable conditions for diving exploration.

How To Get To Playa Del Barco Perdido

Map of Playa Del Barco Perdido, in Murcia, Spain

To get to Playa Del Barco Perdido, you can take the RM-12 highway, the main access route to the area. This road connects the city of Cartagena to La Manga. The beach is located at the beginning of La Manga, around kilometer 0.5, and is easily accessible by car. Parking is available on the streets near the residential areas surrounding the beach.

In addition, a bus service operates along La Manga, making it easy to reach from different points on the peninsula. The bus stop in front of the beach is Las Sirenas—Cart.

Make sure to pay attention to each one of them so you can better plan your stay in the region. Here’s a complete guide on Playa Banco del Tabal:

Best Time to Visit La Manga

image of a wooden path in the sand leading to the sea

Firstly, when planning your trip to Cartagena, especially the region of La Manga, we highly encourage you to do it during the summer season. The months between June and August are the best and most sought-after.

The advantage is that you can enjoy almost every activity during this time of the year along with the beautiful sunny days at the beach. Whether you want to take surfing lessons, go scuba diving, or do water sports, there’s no better time to do them.

Additionally, the sunny weather helps when exploring the beauty of this place and the natural reserves available nearby. If you want to take a vacation to reconnect with nature, this is the perfect place and opportunity for you.

Accommodations of All Kinds

image of a wooden path in the sand along with people walking on the background

When looking for hotels and places to stay in La Manga, you’ll find many options from all price ranges and kinds. This is a huge advantage and makes it much easier to find an option that fits your budget and is exactly what you need for your vacation.

You can book options near Playa del Banco and alternatives closer to the center of Cartagena. The best hotel for your needs will depend on how much you want to spend and what you plan on doing during your time in the region.

Our personal recommendation goes to AluaSun Doblemar, a stunning hotel with everything you need for a memorable stay, including pools, breakfast, and beautiful bedrooms to rest. The prices can vary from 80 to 250 euros depending on when you visit and the kind of room you plan on staying in. I had a great time at this hotel and surely recommend its amazing services.

Along with Alua, you also have tons of other incredible places, including Entremares, Poseidon, and many others. Make sure to check each one to see if they fit what you’re looking for.

Notice that the prices tend to increase significantly during the high season. However, if you plan your trip early and book the hotel soon, you might get some pretty exciting discounts on some of the main hotels in the region. It’s always a good idea to keep monitoring the prices to find the hotel you want at the cheapest price possible.

Tons of Options Nearby

image showing the sea and the apartments next to the beach

Finding activities to do and places to visit in San Javier is effortless. Playa del Banco del Tabal is located right between Star Alfa and Gaivotas, a strip of land that offers easy access and tons of options.

The place has all kinds of services, whether regarding food, drinks, or anything else. But if you still didn’t find what you were looking for, you can take a short walk to the neighboring beaches and have a great time there.

The good thing is that not only are the other beaches nearby, but also the attractions. Whether you want to visit Cartagena’s theater for a more cultural experience or just explore the natural beauties around La Manga, everything is very close, and you can go to these locations on foot.

It Can Become Crowded During High Season

image of the beach during summer with multiple people sunbathing

This part of La Manga has a high density of constructions and buildings around the beaches, so it is not rare to see these spaces completely crowded during high season, whether from Spanish citizens who have houses and apartments there or tourists renting these places to spend the summer. This is very important to remember, especially if you want the most peaceful setting possible.

But even when it is overcrowded, the beach is still a great place to be. You can always find a spot in the sand to enjoy the day and the calm breeze of the sea. You surely won’t have any problems even though you travel to the beach during these months.

Moreover, if you don’t feel like staying in the middle of so many people, you can always walk a few minutes to the beaches next to Playa del Banco del Tabal. There are tons of options with all kinds of sands and seas. Some of them tend to be empty and peaceful throughout the year, so if this is what you’re looking for, you will indeed find it.

Great for People With Motion Disabilities

image from the beach showing some of the adaptations for people with disabilities

Few beaches throughout Cartagena and Spain offer the same adaptation for disabled users as Playa Banco del Tabal. You will find everything you need for a great experience, including access ramps throughout the shore, reserved parking spots, adapted toilets, and everything else.

If you want to enjoy the sea, there’s also the perfect solution. Lifeguards and Protección Civil offer an assisted bathing program to help these people get the best out of their experience in the area. This program is available from 11 A.M. to 7 P.M in July and August.

The La Manga del Mar Menor region of Murcia, Spain, is well-known for its beautiful beaches, which offer stunning views, great amenities, and a great holiday climate. One such beach is Playa Cavanna, a gem that attracts tourists and locals alike in search of sun, sea, and fun.

In this article, we will explore the many facets of this stunning beach, highlighting its unique features, infrastructure, climate, and the charming surrounding area of La Manga del Mar Menor.

Table of Contents:

La Manga del Mar Menor

It may be a pure whim of nature – or simply the result of the uncontrollable force of volcanoes. It doesn’t matter. The long, narrow strip of sand appeared right before a beautiful cove bathed by the Mediterranean. This formed a natural pool, the largest saltwater pool in Europe, known as the Mar Menor.

The strip stretches for almost 22 km, dividing the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor. This atypical geographical position creates a sequence of beaches that flank both sides of the strip; together, they provide a variety of coastal phenomena. La Manga is famous for its calm, warm waters on one side while experiencing strong, foamy waves on the other. This dualistic dynamic has made it a sought-after location for many water-related ventures.

Playa Cavanna: Features and Infrastructure

The urban beach of Playa Cavanna stretches for 1200 metres in length and 30 metres in width and is frequented by a large number of people, particularly in the summer period. The beach is closely surrounded by a variety of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops, ensuring that all essential amenities are easily accessible and facilitating a convenient and enjoyable stay.

Specific Beach Features

Here is what you need to know about Playa Cavanna:

  • Sand and Sea: The sand at Playa Cavanna is fine and golden. The sea waters are crystal clear and relatively calm, which attracts many tourists to the area to practice water sports and diving. The sea is also not usually deep, reaching a maximum depth of 7 meters, which provides tranquility and safety, especially for children.
  • Services and Facilities: Playa Cavanna is well equipped with showers, litter bins, toilets, sun loungers, umbrella rentals, and lifeguard posts (in high season). Accessibility is excellent, with ramps and paths adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Climate

Murcia is known for its Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. The average temperature during the summer varies between 25°C and 35°C, with water temperatures that can reach a pleasant 25°C. Winters are mild, with temperatures rarely falling below 10°C, allowing the beach to be visited all year round.

Where To Eat Nearby Playa Cavanna

Of all the beaches I visited in the region, this one had one of the most complete Chiringuitos (beach kiosks). Many people stay there because it offers a wide variety of food and drinks, tables and chairs on the sand, and exceptional service!

But, away from the sand, the area has many other restaurant options. Some of the restaurants I visited that are close to Playa Cavanna are Bamboo Restaurant and St. Gregory’s Restaurante A La Brasa, both specializing in grilled meats. In the evenings, my family and I often opted to eat wonderful pizzas at Pizzeria Rembrandt.

The region really has food options for all tastes and budgets!

What To Do Nearby Playa Cavanna

Sitting on the beach, looking at the sea, jumping in every now and then, and having a nice drink while getting a tan is my vibe! However, I was with my family, and they are more energetic than me, so we had to look for other things to do in the area. It wasn’t difficult, the area has plenty to do. Here are some of the ones I liked the most:

Manga Surf

Manga Surf is a water sports school in Playa Cavanna.

They offer a variety of surfing activities adapted to all skill levels. You can take lessons or simply rent equipment. The sports they cover are: catamaran sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, canoeing and paddle boarding.

La Manga Club

This option is for those looking for a combination of luxury and leisure activities (and golf!). This spa resort offers a wide range of facilities, including golf courses, sports courts, swimming pools, and a full spa. There is also a hotel inside the club, for people who want to stay there.

Cabo de Palos

At a mere distance of 2 km, Cabo de Palos emerges as a picturesque coastal town kissing the Mediterranean Sea; it extends along one side to an untainted coastline leading towards Cartagena. It boasts fame for its marine reserve, historic lighthouse (an ideal spot for cool photos), and favorable conditions for diving exploration. It was here that I undertook my diving lessons, finally culminating in my maiden dive—an experience beyond words!

Hotels and Accommodations

image from the external lounge of the hotel with the beach on the background

When looking for hotels in the region, Galúa Hote, located in “the strip,” is probably the first option you’ll find and also our recommendation. The rooms might not be the cheapest overall, but the structure of the common areas and the entire hotel will definitely please all guests.

Everything is impeccable, and the structure is top-notch. You have a beach bar, swimming pool, entertainment programme options, and everything you expect from a high-quality hotel. The best part is that you have an external area where you can eat breakfast directly at the beach.

It’s a terrace with seats and services that make you feel like a king. All rooms have an air conditioning system, which can save your life during the summer in the region.

Along with the Galúa Hotel, there are numerous other options in the region of La Manga, from various price ranges and kinds. This gives you a large number of options, making it easier to find an alternative that perfectly fits your needs.

Endless Fun in the Region

picture of people walking through the coast of La Manga

Cartagena is one of the most crowded regions of Spain, and there are endless possibilities for activities. The best part is that everything is fairly near each other, and you can do everything on foot.

You can visit Plaza Bohemia, enjoy the sea while eating food from some of the best bars and restaurants in the region, visit shops, and many other things in one of the most sought-after areas of Spain. The region is full of possibilities for people of all ages, whether adults, kids, or anyone.

The same goes for water sports and activities. La Manga is the perfect place for diving, sailing, and anything you expect from a beach with a great structure. Make sure to travel during summer, between June and September, to get the best weather possible and enjoy everything this place has to offer.

You Don’t have to Go Anywhere to Enjoy the Experience

picture taken from inside the hotel's pool showing the beach

If you want a comfortable experience with everything near you and can spend the entire vacation chilling, this is the place for you. Whether you stay at Galúa Hotel and enjoy the wellness centre or at the lounge overlooking the sea, you’ll find all kinds of services without moving away from the beach. The same goes if you’re exploring any part of the shore. The bar serves you everything directly on the sand, so you don’t have to worry about going to the places to order.

It’s one of the most comfortable experiences in Spain and will please those who like to spend the day in the loungers sunbathing. To know the best options for food and drinks, you can always ask the locals for popular suggestions or check the reviews online to see which ones are better ranked.

Crowded During High Season

image showing multiple umbrellas and loungers on the shore of the beach

If you plan on going to Playa de Galua and other attractions in Cartagena during high season, you can expect large groups of people. These places tend to be really overcrowded sometimes, especially between July and August, which is the peak of the summer season.

Even though the beach is larger than others in the region and the structural conditions allow many people to use the space comfortably at the same time, there are times when it can be challenging to find a place on the sand to accommodate yourself.

However, that’s rare and shouldn’t be something to worry about when planning what you want to do in this incredible region. It is just something that can happen depending on the week or month you visit the place. Remember that you can always see the other beaches on foot in case Playa de Galua is too crowded. All the options are fairly close and can be accessed in no more than a 10-minute walk.

Services and Recommendations

image showing two lifeguards preparing their equipment

As you might expect from a beach with lots of waves and crowded spaces, Playa de Galua counts on lifeguard services that can be found throughout the beach to help with everyone’s safety and any emergencies that may occur. The service is free, so don’t think twice about calling them if you need anything.

Along with the lifeguards, you can also find tons of warnings and signs throughout the beach with recommendations you should follow to ensure everyone’s safety. Doing this provides the best experience possible from the beginning to the end of your vacation, not only for you but for those around you as well. If you have any questions regarding them, you can always ask the lifeguards or local workers.

Playa Paraíso La Manga: A True Paradise In Spain!

Who doesn’t love the beach, right? The sea breeze, the sun to get a tan, and the soft sand to lie down and relax on… it sounds wonderful! Beaches are true paradises for those who like to connect with nature on their travels, and that’s why today, we’re going to talk about a literal paradise. Forgive me for the silly pun, but today, we will talk about Paradise Beach.

Playa Paraiso, located in the charming Mar Menor region of the province of Murcia, Spain, is a destination that lives up to its name. Known for its calm, shallow waters, this beach offers a haven of tranquility and natural beauty, making it ideal for families, couples, and water sports enthusiasts.

Table of Contents:

Features of Playa Paraiso

Playa Paraiso borders the municipality of La Manga, which has two seas (the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean) and endless beaches.

The stretch of sand called Playa Paraiso stretches along the beachfront of Playa Honda, but with a unique distinction; it is not backed by any urban development but by the former Marchamalo salt flats. These two are separated by a wide seafront path and a landscaped area. The fine sandy beach faces northwest and is bordered to the east by Playa de los Alemanes, bringing the total distance to 800 meters. While Playa Lomas del Castillico is 1.7 km from there.

Although delineating boundaries between these beaches is challenging, given their seamless fusion, each has its unique charm and character waiting to be explored.

Specifications

Here are the direct specifications of Playa Paraiso:

  • Length: 800 meters
  • Average width: 17 meters
  • Sea: Mar Menor
  • Type of ground: Medium sand
  • Degree of occupancy: High
  • Type: Semi-urban

Water and Sand

The warm, calm waters of Playa del Paraíso make it unique – a characteristic synonymous with the Mar Menor’s beaches. The sea is not deep and is safe for small children and inexperienced swimmers, as they can play without any danger. In addition, the fine, golden sand creates an ideal setting for sunbathing and relaxing. By all accounts, this beach seems safe and ideal for swimming or sunbathing.

Climate

The region enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine annually with a Mediterranean climate. Summer temperatures are very pleasant, ranging between 25°C and 30°C, while winters are mild, with averages around 15°C. This makes the region’s beaches perfect for year-round enjoyment.

Facilities and Infrastructure

Those who visit the beach have access to countless facilities that transform the experience from good to excellent!

Accessibility

Paraíso Beach is easily accessible, with parking located directly on the beach. There are also wheelchair ramps, making the beach accessible to those with reduced mobility.

Amenities

The beach is well-equipped with a variety of amenities, including:

  • Bathrooms and showers: Clean and well-maintained facilities.
  • Sun loungers and umbrellas: Available for rent.
  • Lifeguards: During peak season, the beach has lifeguard services to ensure the safety of swimmers.
  • Litter Bins

Playa Paraiso Is Dog Friendly

Here’s some good news for animal lovers: Praia do Paraíso is a dog-friendly beach! Dogs can stay and bathe under the supervision and responsibility of their owners.

The signs at the beach’s entrance specify some rules for use. Due to its proximity to conventional bathing areas, wooden markers with ropes delimit the sandy area that dogs can use. The beach also has dog wash stations so owners can remove sand and salt from their pets.

Where to Eat Near Playa Paraiso

The area has many restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and budgets. The closest place on the beach is Coco & Melón Chiringuito (a type of beach kiosk). The food there is very good, and the view of the sea makes everything even better.

Almost at Honda Beach, there is another Chiringuito: Casablanca. This is another great option for those who don’t want to leave the sand to eat.

But, if that’s not the case, my recommendation is Malvasía restaurant, a highly rated and luxurious restaurant with contemporary food, a great wine list, and simply magnificent! It’s worth a visit.

Nearby Playa Paraiso

The Playa del Paraíso area offers a variety of options to suit any preference of those looking for different activities and places of interest. Here are some of the main recreational options:

Complejo Deportivo Playa Paraiso

Right next to Playa Paraiso, behind a residential complex, the Complejo Deportivo Playa Paraiso is perfect for sports enthusiasts. It has several courts, a gym, and a swimming pool, making it a great place to practice or learn these sports.

Calblanque Nature Park

Calblanque Nature Park
ServiGroup

Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas y Peña del Águila Regional Park is a ten-minute drive from the Playa Paraiso. A nature reserve known for its pristine beaches, rugged cliffs, and rich biodiversity, the park offers hiking and cycling trails and is a haven for various flora and fauna.

La Manga Club

Just a 10-minute drive away is La Manga Club, a world-renowned golf resort with three 18-hole golf courses. In addition to golf, the resort offers guests a variety of leisure options, including tennis academies, a spa, swimming pools, and various restaurants and bars.

La Manga Club is a place that combines luxury with leisure and also offers accommodation options!

Cartagena

The city of Cartagena, located a 20-minute drive away, is rich in history and culture. Some of the main attractions include the Roman Theater, the Port of Cartagena, and the Historic Centre. This trip is well worth it for those who like to walk and discover new places!

Cabo de Palos

Just 2 km away, Cabo de Palos is a charming coastal village that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea, on one side stretching out along an unspoiled coastline towards Cartagena. It is known for its marine reserve, historic lighthouse (very cool for taking photos), and excellent diving conditions. It was there that I took my diving lessons and was finally able to do my first dive, which was an incredible experience!

How To Get To Playa Paraiso

Location of Playa Paraíso, right next to Playa Honda

Playa Paraiso is easily accessible by various means of transportation. By car, you can get there via the RM-12 highway, which connects Cartagena to La Manga del Mar Menor; just take exit 8 towards Playa Honda/Mar de Cristal. For those who prefer public transportation, the ALSA bus line connects Cartagena to La Manga, with stops near Playa Honda and Playa Paraiso. Taxis and private transportation services are also available in the area for convenience.

The entire region has numerous hotel and vacation home/apartment options. Rentals are available to suit all types of comforts and budgets. There are also plenty of supermarkets and restaurants all around!

Table of Contents

Where’s Playa del Vivero Located

map from La Manga showing playa del vivero

As we mentioned, Playa el Vivero is located in Cartagena, more specifically in the region of La Manga, right next to Mar Menor. The sandy beach is one of the most sought-after destinations in Murcia, whether because of its clear-sand shore or because of the multiple other beauties it holds.

It’s the perfect spot for some photos, and with good weather conditions, it’s ideal for spending the day. This location also makes it easier for tourists to go to any other place or access any part of La Manga without needing to rent a car. You can go to the accommodation where you’ll stay or look for restaurants, all on foot.

Guide for Planning Your Trip

picture of multiple boats on the shore of playa del vivero

Now, it’s time to examine the main aspects you need to know before packing your things for Playa del Vivero. Make sure to look at each aspect below to better understand the place and what you can do to make your trip unforgettable.

We will cover every aspect of the region, including water, parking, and anything else. Here’s what you need to know:

Affordable and Luxury Hotels

picture from a resort located in La Manga

Whether you’re visiting Playa del Vivero or other Mar Menor beaches, one thing is sure: you’ll find various options when it comes to accommodation.

There are hotels and Airbnbs of all price ranges to ensure you find the perfect one that fits your expectations and budget. You can stay at simple rooms available for rental or complete resorts with breakfast and everything you expect from a top-notch experience.

Choosing the more affordable options doesn’t mean they’ll be far from La Manga. You can find many cheap options almost at the shore of Playa del Vivero. Make sure to do deep research before planning your trip, and you’ll surely find multiple options for an excellent price.

Close to Restaurants and Attractions

image of a restaurant in Cartagena

If you’re going to La Manga, it is essential to know that you’ll find everything you want in the region, dismissing the need to rent a car or take the road to go somewhere else to find what you want.

We highly recommend Vivero 55 if you want a great Mediterranean/Spanish cuisine experience that is both affordable and unforgettable. Each dish is made with precision and love to provide the best meal you can think of in the region.

The restaurant is one of the closest to Playa del Vivero and delivers excellent food and a cozy atmosphere you’ll love. The restaurant also has an external area if you want to have your meal feeling the breeze from the sea.

Small Location with Everything You Need

picture showing multiple people enjoying the beach in Playa del Vivero

When you look at a map of La Manga, you’ll see that the region is relatively small, allowing you to reach any part of it within minutes. This might lead some to wonder whether they can find everything they need locally or if they’ll need to travel elsewhere for certain amenities.

Based on my time in the region, I can assure you that Cartagena has everything you might need during your trip, whether it comes to entertainment, food, or anything else. You can take a short walk around the region and see if anything catches your eye, or look at your phone map to see the main options available nearby.

On the other hand, the beach can disappoint many people since it doesn’t have a restaurant or anything like that around. If you want to grab some food or drinks, you might need to walk to the nearest beach to get them, but it is not far, and you can find everything you want within minutes.

Rarely Overcrowded

image of multiple people sunbathing at the beach

If you look for a peaceful destination for your next trip, free of annoying things from the urban area or noise, Playa del Vivero is a great option. It is a famous destination but is rarely overcrowded, and you can always enjoy the region’s silence while sunbathing.

Even though it’s rare, there are dates and occasions when you can find a high volume of people throughout the year. But it is nothing that will bother you or ruin the calm atmosphere of this incredible place.

There’s enough space for everyone throughout the beach, and even when I visited La Manga during high season, I never had a problem with space. It is one of the best beaches in Murcia if you want a peaceful vacation to connect with nature and enjoy a chilling experience.

It’s in the Middle of Two Famous Beaches

picture of a wooden path leading to the sea in Cartagena

Playa del Vivero is truly a hidden gem, especially when considering that it is situated in the middle of two of La Manga’s main beaches, Playa Paraíso and Playa Honda, both much more extensive and populated during low and high seasons. If you’re looking for something more crowded and full of energy, you can easily access both areas on foot with a short walk that will take not more than ten minutes.

This variety of options also makes La Manga a popular destination for tourists and visitors. There’s no need to worry about running out of things to do; you can easily walk between beaches and experience a different atmosphere every day of your stay.

Shallow and Calm Sea

image showing the sand and sea of Playa del Vivero

If you like agitated seas with lots of waves, there might be better destinations for your next vacation than Playa del Vivero. Here, you’ll find a shallow, calm sea that is great for a quiet experience and spending quality time with your family.

Speaking of family, the sea is also perfect for kids as there are no waves, and it is way safer than most other seas in the region. That’s why it is so familiar to see children running around, and even though it’s one of the safest seas, you’ll also find lifeguard services ready to help you in case of any emergency.

If you’re looking for some waves and more intense experiences, some neighboring beaches have exactly what you want, like Playa Paraiso. The sea there is usually more agitated, and you can take a short walk directly from Playa del Vivero. It’s a great way to please everyone, regardless of the kind of sea they like.

About Murcia

Murcia is known for its rich history and stunning natural landscapes. The region in southeastern Spain has a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters, making it a perfect destination for people looking for good swimming conditions all year round. The coast of Murcia, called Costa Cálida, is famous for its fine sand beaches and clear waters. The location is an influential place for tourism and water sports.

La Manga Del Mar Menor

One of Murcia’s most attractive areas is La Manga del Mar Menor, a destination where you can relax and enjoy the sea and the activities at its Nautical Station.

The Mar Menor is the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe, located on the coast of southeastern Spain. A strip of sand separates the 52 square kilometers from the Mediterranean, creating warm, shallow waters and attractive beaches popular with tourists.

La Manga, or La Manga del Mar Menor, is a coastal point of the Mar Menor. The strip is 21 km long and 100 meters wide, separating the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor lagoon, from Cabo de Palos to Punta del Mojón. The region is incredible, and as a tourist, I can say that it was a great option for traveling with my family. I was able to visit countless paradisiacal beaches and practice countless water sports. One of the beaches I loved most in La Manga was Playa Matasgordas, and that’s what we will talk about today.

General Beach Information

Playa Matasgordas stands out for its serene and unspoiled atmosphere. It is a semi-urban beach with few visitors, contributing to its calm and secluded atmosphere. This makes it perfect for those who enjoy less crowded and quieter beaches. With an extension of 3,300 meters and an average width of 10 meters, the beach offers a vast area of coarse golden sand, ideal for sunbathing and beach games.

Facilities

Although it is a more natural and less developed beach, Playa Matagorda offers some facilities to ensure the comfort of visitors. Services are concentrated near the main residential blocks and include drinking water, litter bins, play areas for children, and footwashes. There is also a hire service for sunbeds and sun shades offered. Hiring sporting and leisure equipment, like windsurfing equipment and sailing boats, is possible for sports lovers.

Nearby Gastronomy

The beach is very close to urban areas, and within a 1-kilometer radius of distance, you can find several restaurants and bars with great cuisine. The restaurant that I liked the most was Restaurant Camarote de la Martinique, a Mediterranean restaurant with great options for those who want to try Spanish food.

On other days when I was hungry, I visited the beach kiosks in the area: Chiringuito Cálido, a tapas bar on the beach, and Chiringuito El Francés, where I tried different and very refreshing drinks.

Leisure Options In The Area of Playa Matasgordas

In addition to enjoying the beach, the area around Playa Matasgordas offers a variety of activities for visitors.

The Polideportivo La Manga del Mar Menor is an excellent leisure option for those in the Playa Matasgordas area. The sports complex offers a wide range of activities, including tennis, basketball, and soccer courts, as well as swimming and other water sports facilities. Since I was staying near the area, I could go there and enjoy the modern and well-equipped facilities. It was a pleasant experience for my family.

Another slightly more extreme option is the Mediterranean Jet Jet Ski Rental La Manga. Near the beach, the place offers jet skis for rent and rides, as well as guided tours. They also have “scooters,” which are toys with slides—kids love them!

In the evenings, I most enjoyed watching movies at Cine El Galan La Manga (movie theater) with my family.

As we mentioned, Cala Cortina is located in the region of Murcia, Spain, and is one of the most famous tourist destinations for people in Cartagena. It is fairly close to everything, and you can go from one place to another by taking a short walk.

Don’t worry about renting a car or anything like that since the city centre is also a few minutes away. If you need to go to locals a little farther away, a car service app like Uber can solve any problem.

The city is filled with tourists throughout the year, and there are various activities to do. Don’t worry about boredom because it won’t be a problem while you explore this place’s endless possibilities.

What You Need to Know Before Going to Cala Cortina

Now, we will show you the main aspects of this hidden paradise located a few kilometers from the center of Cartagena. Make sure to take a look at each aspect below to better plan your vacation and get the most out of your stay in the municipality.

Here’s everything about Cala Cortina and why it is such a perfect place to visit:

Murcia’s Most Beautiful Beach

Cala Cortina is considered by most to be Murcia’s most beautiful beach and one of the best spots in all of Spain. And there is a reason for that.

Everything in this place is absolutely stunning and makes some of the best landscapes you’ll ever see in the region.

From a harbor you can visit to see the sea to the fish you can find swimming in the shallow part of the beach, everything will catch your eye and make you feel like you are in paradise. Don’t miss an opportunity to swim in this crystal water that is also perfect for water sports. The sand is also soft and great for some walks.

These are just some of the perks that Cala Cortina offers. Everything contributes to this being tourists’ favorite spot in the entire region. From cliffs to other natural formations, everything contributes to a landscape that will never be forgotten.

It Has Everything You Need

Even though the beach doesn’t have kilometres in length like others, it has a complete structure to provide everything you need in terms of services and tools. You’ll find plenty of showers to clean your feet from the sand, restaurants to eat in, and lifeguards throughout the beach who are ready to help you with whatever you need.

It is a small bay but has all the structure you expect from a beach of this kind. You won’t have to worry about going somewhere else or driving back to the hotel if you need toilets, food, or any kind of service.

These lifeguards and help services are essential, and you should always seek these professionals in case of any accident or emergency, whether when exploring the rocks around the coast or the sea. Make sure to follow all the instructions they give you for the best experience possible when enjoying this Mediterranean paradise.

It Can Be Crowded

As you might expect from Cartagena’s most famous beach, it can be really crowded sometimes, especially during the high season in the summer, when all hotels are fully reserved.

Whether you visit the area during the day or night, you’ll always find someone at the beach and an open restaurant to grab some food and drinks. It’s a good option whether you want to enjoy the nightlife or chill during a sunny day.

The number of people in Cala Cortina can also be a problem if you’re using a rented car or even using your own. Finding a parking lot is not easy, and the nearest ones are always full. The best way is to avoid this kind of transportation if you’re visiting the beach.

Endless Activities to Do

Cala Cortina is also a paradise for doing all kinds of activities. There’s the iconic steep staircase if you want to practice photography and the crystal clear water for scuba diving.

You’re also not restricted only to the region, as the center of Cartagena is only a few minutes away. Whether you want to visit the theater for a more cultural experience or just try the awarded local food in some of the restaurants in the region, there are infinite possibilities in the region.

The fact that you can be anywhere you want in just a few kilometers makes the experience much better and more dynamic. Make sure to bring some friends and enjoy everything this piece of Spain has to offer.

Don’t Worry About Your Spanish

One thing about Cala Cortina and the region of Murcia is that even though knowing how to speak Spanish can help a lot, it is not obligatory. You might meet some people who don’t speak English, but that’s not common, and you can easily find someone to help you with whatever you need.

I had no problem looking for information or anything like that during my time there, even though my Spanish is not the best. We highly recommend learning the basics before traveling, maybe some Duolingo sessions but nothing too fancy.
