La Manga Club Resort was created almost 50 years ago, founded in 1972 by Gregory Peters of California, a golfer and businessman. At that time, the resort was a pioneer in the area and focused primarily on golf when few knew about the sport. With two golf courses opened then, La Manga Club quickly became a landmark in the region.

La Manga Club Structure And Amenities

Over the years, the complex has expanded its facilities, including a hotel, apartments, football pitches, and an impressive 28-court tennis center run by tennis legends such as Manolo Santana.

The space is home to three championship golf courses (north course, south course, and west course), with excellent practice facilities. Today, we will focus specifically on the North Course.

La Manga Club North Course

Designed by renowned golf architect Robert Dean Putman, the La Manga North Course boasts a stunning layout that winds through the region’s picturesque landscapes. The La Manga Club North Course is wide and moderately short, perfect for high to mid handicappers, yet remains a great test of golf for all levels.

Structure

Map of La Manga north course holes, with tighter fairways, the undulating course is slightly shorter than the south course and have water hazards and barrancas

The North Course is slightly shorter and hillier than the West and South Course. Palm trees, lakes, and natural storm gullies (known as “barrancas”) are key features of the North Course.

The Palm trees line most of the fairways, and the putting surfaces (often multi-level) are well proportioned, with creative greenside bunkering and tighter fairways in evidence.

The tighter fairways and larger greens than the other courses are built to USGA specification, with a notable amount of movement incorporated into them.

The undulating course has 18 holes with a total par of 71. It follows a links style, with varying distances, including holes with distances of 5,755, 5,426, 5,187, and 4,962 meters.

The large greens’ movement adds to the challenge, primarily the short par-3 2nd, which has three different tiers. This is a technically more accessible course for players of all levels.

Real Golf La Manga Club – Academy

Lesson of golf in the North Course

If you are not a golf expert (as most of us are not), you can have lessons and enjoy the North Course with a professional instructor team.

Established at the end of 2019, the Club Golf Academy’s main objective is to help enjoy golf even more. The 5-day Total Golf Experience school is the most popular option. Still, they have many lesson options available in both an individual and group setting in English, Spanish, and French for adults or kids.

The space features two state-of-the-art classrooms, four separate group classrooms, a 45-bay training area, and excellent short-game facilities, meaning all learning and practice goals can be achieved for any client. I had the opportunity to stay there for a few days, and the academy classes were essential for me to take advantage of what the courses offer. The staff and instructor provided exceptional service!

An Awesome Golfing Experience

La manga club north course

Undoubtedly, La Manga Club’s North Course has earned a special place in my heart as my favorite course in the resort. I can’t wait to return and take on its challenges again.

The North Course offers a different golf experience compared to its South and West counterparts. Although it may be slightly shorter, it makes up for it with its challenging fairways and spacious greens. I’m not a professional golfer, so the experience there was more enjoyable than the other courses.

Each hole presents new challenges, from small greens to narrow fairways, complemented by natural features such as mountain overlooks and ravines. Also, it’s essential to mention the excellent condition of the course. It was impeccable!

The course has been selecting and testing grass varieties for over two years to renovate and improve its greens. In 2020, Bermuda Ultra-Dwarf was chosen due to its harmony in hot climates. This variety consumes, on average, 30% less water than the current variety and has a high tolerance to salinity, weeds, and different diseases, which considerably reduces the use of phytosanitary products. The renovation improves biodiversity by helping maintain natural habitats and substantially increasing the golf course’s great condition, consequently improving the player’s experience.

How to Get the Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort

How to access the Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort

If you want to visit the Hacienda by car, you can do so easily thanks to the regional motorways that provide quick access to its installations. From Murcia, we should take the RM-1 motorway and then exit RM-F56. Of course, we can also get there by taxi.

We can easily access the Hacienda directly from the Murcia International Airport (Corvera). The airport is twenty minutes away from the resort. We can also access the Hacienda from the Alicante Airport, which is sixty minutes away from the resort.

The Hacienda Riquelme Golf Course

The golf course in the Hacienda Riquelme Murcia Spain

The Hacienda Riquelme’s golf course was designed by Nicklaus Design and inaugurated in June 2008. It satisfied the needs of novice and professional golfers looking for a pitch with extensive fairways and beautiful landscapes.

This golf course features 6,356 meters from the tee to the green point, is Par 72, and boasts eighteen holes surrounded by olive trees and water hazards. Indeed, this course stands out due to its handful of lakes, various bunkers, and multi-tiered greens.

Undoubtedly, the Hacienda Riquelme’s golf course is one the most interesting attractions of the Hacienda and even of the Murcia region, especially for tourists from all over Europe and in every season of the year, either summer or winter.

Tees, Greens, and Grass

The golf course map in the Hacienda Riquelme

The Hacienda Riquelme Golf Course

Most of the greens in this golf course are high and wide, which is incredibly beneficial for both types of golfers – novices and seniors – since they can practice and enjoy their swing and hip movement! However, golfers will require a range of driving abilities – such as an excellent swing or constant par – to advance properly throughout the course while witnessing the incredible views of El Valle.

One of the most notable aspects of this course is that it is completely made up (tees, greens, greens, and rough) of Paspalum Vaginatum, a particular kind of grass that does not require too much water for its conservation. This grass also supports changes in weather and temperature. In general, the golf course seems like a calming and high-quality park where to spend a nice Saturday afternoon.

Holes’ Complexity and Obstacles

Several bunkers in the golf course of the Hacienda Riquelme

The bunkers in the golf course of the Hacienda Riquelme.

Hole 9 stands out due to its complexity. It’s a Par 4 and is 341 meters from the tees. This hole has a water body to the side throughout its entire length. The tee is very near the lake, so the first strike to the ball should be incredibly accurate. Besides, the green is surrounded by a protected bunker, so doing a par, a bogey, or even a birdie is really complicated.

Hole 18, on the other hand, is a Par 4 that is 369 meters from the tee to the green. It is probably the most difficult hole on this course. The tee is also near the lake, and the golfer must make a large strike to overcome the water hazard immediately ahead. In the fairway, we will find two large bunkers, one on the right side and another on the left side. Moreover, the entrance to the green is very narrow.

Consequently, it’s the right hole to consider our abilities and decide if we’re good enough to make a par. Sometimes, a bogey is not a bad idea! If we’re lucky or good enough, we will be able to make a putt and hit the small softly to complete the hole.

Dress Code

A girl hitting a ball in the golf course of the Hacienda Riquelme

We should keep in mind that the Hacienda’s golf course has exclusive access. Therefore, we need to respect the dress code to access the golf pitch, which means we need to wear a proper outfit to play there.

Men: knee-length trousers or shorts, tucked shirts, long socks, and gold shoes.

Women: skirts or shorts, short-sleeve collared shirts, and golf shoes, like spikes.

It’s surrounded by a magnificent natural environment, very close to the Mediterranean coast, beaches, coves, and archaeological sites that enrich the experience. La Manga Club also has incredible golf courses, which we will delve into in this article. These courses have a good number of intriguing dogleg holes, courses for beginners and professionals, and many challenges for us to overcome.

What Is La Manga Club South Course?

La Manga Club South Course

It is a golf pitch characterized by wide palm-fringed fairways. Still, this south golf course is fairly spacious. Additionally, since most holes have bodies of water, many golfers may reconsider whether they want to play on this particular course.

The South Course is considered a long course, featuring almost 6,500 meters from the white tees. It has multiple water hazards –elevating the play’s difficulty– on 15 of its 18 holes and a few hidden dangers. The front nine is particularly challenging, with two par 3s in excess of 200 meters. To successfully cross the course, you will require fairway woods or long irons to the green. Keep in mind that this course is a total challenge and can be really tough!

The front nine holes are especially challenging, with several sands and water traps. The course includes two par three with more than 200 meters and some daunting par four. These holes require precise driving between bodies of water and strategically positioned bunkers. The back nine is shorter than the front nine and has a good number of intriguing dog-leg holes.

We must pay special attention to holes 11 and 12, which demand precise club selection to reach the greens on the other side of the water.

The South Course has hosted many major professional tournaments, including men’s and women’s PGA Championships and several Spanish Opens.

The History Behind One of the Best Sports Resorts in La Manga

The South Course in 1971 in La Manga Resort

La Manga Club, and especially Campo Sur, has more than fifty years of history and experience. As the best golf resort in the area, this club specializes in providing the best golf experience that will demand accurate driving between strategically placed water hazards and palm trees.

The South Course and North Course Club Resort were designed by Robert Putman, an American professional whom Gregory Peters commissioned to build these contrasting golf courses in 1971-1972. Shortly after its inauguration, the course hosted five Spanish Opens.

Twenty years later, Arnold Palmer improved the course by building a new landscape for the golf experience. Major changes include additional and cunning water hazards, tree planting, and green modifications, making the South Course more challenging for the discerning golfer. Then, in 2004, the house renovated the course, changing it considerably since it hosted the Spanish Open between 1973 and 1977.

An extra course, the West Course, was added in 1998 when Dave Thomas, a former golf player and golf course designer, extended the previous 9-hole course, La Princesa, originally designed in 1986.

La Manga Club West Coursestands out among the three courses at La Manga Club

La Manga West Course: A Golfing Jewel on the Spanish Coast

The La Manga West Course, situated in the recognized La Manga Club Resort in Murcia, Spain, is an outstanding golfing destination known for its challenging layout and scenic beauty. The West Course stands out among the three golf courses at La Manga Club, presenting a unique golfing experience that contrasts with the resort’s North and South Courses.

Read this article and learn all the necessary information about this incredible golf course!

Table of Contents

History Of The Golf Course

The West Course at La Manga Club opened as a nine-hole course in 1986 and was initially named the Atamaria Course and later La Princessa. In 1996, the renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas redesigned and expanded it into an 18-hole course. This result has transformed the course into one of the most challenging in the Spanish region.

Since its opening, the course has been acknowledged for its congruous integration with the natural landscape. It features undulating and tight fairways surrounded by dense Mediterranean vegetation.

The course has quickly become a favorite among golfers visiting La Manga Club, described as the resort’s “crown jewel.” This reputation has been cemented over the years as the course has been included in several prominent rankings and hosted numerous prestigious golf tournaments.

Layout and Features

Designed by the famed golf course architect Dave Thomas, the West Course is celebrated for its strategic complexity and picturesque views (and being quite different from the other two courses in the club).

While it is known for its rugged, challenging terrain with narrow fairways and rolling hills, the North Course offers a more open design with wide fairways and undulating greens. The South Course, on the other hand, is a championship course that hosts international competitions, characterized by its length, strategic bunkers, and lakes that test players’ skill and endurance.

The West Course stretches 5,714 meters and winds through undulating terrain. It features significant elevation changes and dense tree-lined fairways.

The beautiful course is characterized by its “barrancas”— natural storm gullies that present both aesthetic beauty and formidable hazards. The front nine holes demand accuracy to navigate these gullies, while the back nine, set higher among the hills, offers a more open but challenging experience.

Challenge and Strategy

Strategy on the West Course is crucial due to its rugged topography, difficult terrain, and the presence of natural obstacles such as ravines and dense vegetation.

The course has many elevations and ravines (known locally as “barrancas”), which require precise and well-planned shots.

While playing the course, it became evident how important it is to plan your shots carefully, which made accuracy very important. Another thing that made everything more challenging was the presence of many narrow fairways surrounded by dense trees, some holes around lakes, and well-positioned bunkers.

The undulating land, fast greens, and outstanding views make this course quite exciting to play. The course’s routing sees the first six holes form a loop around the main clubhouse, followed by a stretch of narrow, challenging holes leading to the back nine. This layout provides constant changes in direction and elevation, ensuring a varied and engaging round.

Different Challenge In Each Hole

As already mentioned, the course has 18 great holes, each presenting a different challenge. I could describe each hole to you; they all offer something different. However, from my experience, I want to mention a few that were the highlights of my round.

  • Hole 3 (Par 5): This hole stands out for its challenging tee shot over a ravine. The green is well-protected and difficult to reach, so I needed to make a precise shot to avoid severe penalties.
La Manga West Course Map - A hilly land with each fairway surrounded by trees, together with barrancas and water hazards.

  • Hole 9 (Par 5): One of the most iconic holes on the course, it features an uphill tee shot followed by a steep descent to a large green, protected by a ravine in front and a lake behind. It demands accurate driving to avoid the ‘barrancas.’
  • Hole 10 (Par 4): I believe this is one of the most difficult holes on the course. The elevation and need for precision make it a real test.
  • Hole 16 (Par 3): I was informed that it is considered one of the most difficult holes. It does not allow room for error; any shot outside the green can result in severe penalties. It is an ideal challenge for more tactical golfers.
  • Hole 18 (Par 4): This is an impressive final hole. The tee shot is taken from a considerable elevation with panoramic views of the resort and the sea in the background. For me, it should be considered the signature hole. It combines the scenic beauty of the La Manga region with a significant technical challenge! It is a great finishing hole to a great course.

La Manga Club – Experience and Infrastructure

The La Manga West Course is located at the La Manga Club, a resort created almost 50 years ago and founded in 1972 by Gregory Peters, a golfer and businessman from California. The resort pioneered the area and focused primarily on golf when few knew about the sport.

Amenities for Various Sports

The resort is not only a golfing haven but also boasts amenities for various sports, making it a versatile destination for athletes and families alike. The wide range of activities, including cycling, running, swimming, cricketing, and more, thrilled me.

In addition, this center of convenience and luxury offers a variety of amenities to suit players and visitors alike. This sophisticated space includes:

  • A Pro Shop is well-stocked with golf equipment, clothing, and accessories, allowing players to equip themselves before a round properly. You can also have access to information about renting a buggy and important accessories for your departure as a course planner.
  • Modern changing rooms have all the necessary amenities for players to prepare or freshen up after a game.
  • Event and conference facilities are suitable for corporate meetings and personal celebrations.

Academy & Practice Center

If you are not an expert, you can take golf lessons and enjoy the West Course with a professional instructor team. They provide many English, Spanish, and French lesson options for adults or kids in both individual and group settings.

I had the privilege of staying at the facility for a few days, and the academy classes were instrumental in maximizing my experience on the courses.

The space ensured that all my learning and practice objectives were met with its two cutting-edge classrooms, four dedicated group classrooms, an expansive 45-bay training area, and top-notch short-game facilities. Moreover, the staff and instructors (who are Golf Experts) delivered service of the highest caliber, further enhancing my time there.

Bar and Restaurants

The resort offers an impressive variety of bars and restaurants, ranging from international proposals to the authentic flavors of Mediterranean cuisine and traditional local dishes. With 12 gastronomic options, the resort ensures that all palates are catered for.

As there were many options, it’s interesting to highlight the ones I liked the most. Among them is the Asia restaurant, probably my favourite, where I tasted the best of Southeast Asian cuisine and experienced a true gastronomic journey through the East.

At Don Luigi Trattoria, Italian cuisine is the star, with pizzas and plates of pasta prepared in the traditional way.

For those who enjoy incredible snacks and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere, 37 Spikes & Sports Bar is the perfect choice. In Amapola, the emphasis is on Mediterranean food and local Spanish dishes, which offered me an authentic and sophisticated culinary experience.

Accommodations and Leisure

Over the years, the complex has expanded its facilities, including a hotel, apartments, and leisure spaces such as an outdoor swimming pool, children’s pool, gym, play areas, and an incredible spa.

The resort is incredibly complete, and while I wasn’t playing golf, I had no problems finding something to do!

Playa De Puerto Bello: La Manga Del Mar Menor

If you are looking for fun and moments of relaxation by the sea, the coast of Murcia is a perfect getaway for you. In this article, I will introduce you to Puerto Bello Beach, where you can disconnect from the stress of everyday life and enjoy moments of peace in contact with nature.

Table of Contents:

Understand the Region

Puerto Bello Beach is a popular destination situated in La Manga del Mar Menor, a coastal area of Mar Menor, within the region of Cartagena, located in Murcia, Spain.

The Mar Menor is a “big pool” with salty water near the city of Murcia. Many people visit this spot to swim in the calm, not deep waters. They love Mar Menor because it is great for swimming, families, and fun water activities. The long stretch of pretty golden sand beaches make it a perfect place to relax and see the natural beauty of Spain.

La Manga Del Mar Menor is a long strip of land by the sea. It keeps the Mediterranean Sea apart from the Mar Menor lagoon. This strip goes from Cabo de Palos to the Salinas Natural Park in San Pedro del Pinatar. It stretches 22 km in length and varies between 100 and 1,200 meters in width.

La Manga offers a variety of enjoyable activities and accommodations. Visitors are drawn to the region for its excellent service and diverse mix of people from various places. Significant development has occurred in recent years, with more homes and businesses being built. Many holiday homes are located by the sea, providing easy access to services and infrastructure in the area.

The region is also known for its beautiful beaches and amicable weather. With calm, warm, and shallow waters, conditions are ideal for family bathing and water activities throughout the year.

My initial experience of the Manga region was excellent. The streets around the Autovía de La Manga are vibrant, with many colors from nature and many souvenir shops, bars, and clubs. The beach is extraordinary, especially for those accustomed to colder waters. The sand is incredibly fine and white, and the sea is pleasantly warm and shallow. You can walk meters away from the shore, and the water only reaches up to your hips.

Playa De Puerto Bello

Located at mile 1.5 of La Manga del Mar Menor, the beach is at the south end of Puerto Bello Marina and is one of the few undeveloped areas in this part of La Manga where it is possible to park cars in the dunes.

The southern end of the port is one of the few undeveloped areas in this part of La Manga, and it is sometimes necessary to park cars in the dunes. However, the development is spectacular in the north, where the port facilities and Playa De Puerto Bello are located. From a perspective other than looking at it directly, it is very typical La Manga: yachts together with other luxurious vessels sail effortlessly over Mar Menor’s placid blue waters, showing high residential towers in the distance.

Beach Description

The beach stretches 500 meters long and almost 50 meters wide, featuring a thin strip of sand. It has calm waters, with few waves and shallow. Bathers can walk a long way to the bottom and the water will still reach their waist.

Amenities

The beach itself offers limited services, although restaurants and shops are plentiful and close by, especially at the north end. Sun loungers and parasols are available for hire during the summer as well as children’s play facilities and lifeguards.

Drinking water, litter bins, toilets, showers, cleaning service, telephone, and wooden walkways on the beach are also provided.

Weather in La Manga del Mar Menor:

The mainland region of Murcia is the hottest in Spain and has an average temperature of 18 degrees, making it perfect to visit all year round.

In summer months, Playa De Puerto Bello tends to be very busy, which is not ideal for people looking for more deserted and calm beaches. In this case, I recommend that you go in other seasons, such as spring. But, if you like trendy places, Playa De Puerto Bello will be perfect for you all year round.

Know the Mud Baths Murcia and Its Incredible Benefits for Health!

Explore the Mud Baths Murcia and Its Incredible Health Benefits!

The Murcia region in the southeast of Spain is a great destination for summer or even just a holiday break. It has many attractions and activities that we can do alone or together with friends, family, or a partner. Whatever our preference, the Murcian shore, and especially the La Manga area, boasts many incredible corners that will relax even the most demanding and tough visitor.

At the northern end of the thin strip of La Manga, we can find a particular place rich in famous therapeutic mud baths: Lo Pagán. This site offers unique activities perfect for the summer months, as well as a unique bathing experience with therapeutic properties.

Table of Contents:

Benefits of Taking a Mud Bath in Murcia

Two people after covering their bodies with mud in the mud baths of Murcia

Mud baths have multiple benefits for health and looks. Although people generally use mud baths for beauty treatments, they have many other benefits.

  • It exfoliates dead skin cells. Millions of cells die every day, and our bodies expel them through different means. A mud bath has the power to remove these cells naturally, helping your body regenerate easily.
  • It cleans and draws out impurities from the skin. A bath of this nature helps to remove all the imperfections and strange particles in the skin and pores. Your skin gets smoother thanks to the healing effect of the mud and its minerals.
  • It relaxes muscles. Thalassotherapy centres use mud to provide relaxing services, including massages and mud therapy. The same happens in Las Charcas, letting us enjoy a relaxing experience that softens our muscles and removes discomfort and pain.
  • It relieves arthritis pain. For centuries, people have used mud baths to relieve muscular and articulation pain. This is why so many elders visit Las Charcas Mud Baths to find relief from bone inconveniences.
  • It improves the conditions of the skin. Beyond cleaning and exfoliating the skin, a mud bath improves the general conditions of this organ by increasing its resistance, elasticity, and glow.

Note. If you’re trying a mud bath for the first time, it’s wise to do a small patch test on your skin before fully submerging yourself. This allows you to check for any potential allergic reactions or sensitivities to the mud.

How to Apply the Mud

A girl covering her body with mud in the mud baths of Murcia

Although applying the mud can be very easy, it doesn’t hurt to give a little advice.

Since we’ll find mud on the soles of our feet, it is advisable to carry some type of container to carry the sufficient amount of mud that we will need. In this way, we can remove the mud, even if we are outside the lagoon while remaining on the special platforms built for these purposes.

For best results, apply this mud settling all over your body, including your face. This will make the absorption of minerals and nutrients even more efficient.

The Best Place in Spain to Take a Mud Bath

Las Charcas, located in the south area of San Pedro del Pinatar, is a small Sea called the Mar Menor. It is a magical site that hosts an incredible mud bath experience that, together with the subsequent promenade and water bath, relaxes the body and soul.

Las Charcas in Lo Pagan, San Pedro del Pinatar

Las Charcas mud bath location

Las Charcas mud baths are located north of the Mar Menor in the medium-sized town of San Pedro de Pinatar. Las Charcas lies within the Parque Natural de Salinas Arenales, a protected wetland characterized by its rich biodiversity and large bird population.

The renowned therapeutic mud baths of Las Charcas lie to the east of La Playa de Villananitos. This beach boasts exceptionally fine sand, which is an integral part of the baths. Consequently, the days spent indulging in a mud bath with healing properties followed by a soothing saltwater dip in the Mar Menor are among the best experiences you can have in the town of San Pedro de Pinatar. Speaking from personal experience, I’ve spent some of my most memorable summer days basking in the sun and immersing myself in the highly saline waters.

Las Salinas, the area where the baths are, has special climatic conditions that make it unique to enjoy a magical and relaxing summer afternoon. In addition, other activities can be found in the same place, such as the beaches opposite the baths (dipping there after being covered in mud can be a very good idea) or walking along the paved area to reach La Manga.

How to Access the Mud Baths In Mar Menor

How to reach Las Charcas mud baths in Murcia

If you stay in Murcia, you can take a bus that takes fifty minutes to get to San Pedro del Pinatar. This bus, number 70, belongs to a company called Latbus. This service operates during the week, including Sundays. On weekends, buses leave every two hours.

If you stay in San Pedro del Pinatar, you can even walk to Lo Pagán and the surrounding Salinas. From there, the healing mud baths are a few meters away towards the Mar Menor.

However, if you prefer to reach the area by car, take the RM-1 from Murcia. Additionally, there is parking near the beach. The only problem is that this parking lot is often full, especially during the summer. A good alternative, in this sense, is to rent a bicycle to reach the Mar Menor and the mud area. With the bicycle, you can even reach other points in the area, such as Pilar de la Horadada, and La Manga, the thin strip to the south.

Best Things to Do After the Mud Treatment

The Molino de la Calcetera in La Manga Murcia

In general, bathers simply coat themselves in the mud and stay, trying to get the maximum benefit of the bath. This way, visitors emerge from the lagoon to allow the mud to dry, which brings the multiple benefits I’ve mentioned above.

However, a local legend dictates that one of the best ways to maximize the effects and benefits of the mud bath is to spend one hour in the water and then walk a few kilometers to the Molino de la Calcetera Lighthouse. Yet, many choose to lounge by the lagoon and enjoy the views before washing off.

People walking through the paved area in Las Charcas mud baths

I recommend choosing the first option and walking along the edge of the coast until you reach the south windmill. This way, we will be able to enjoy the sun and the beautiful landscapes of La Manga, that thin strip of sand that crosses the Mediterranean Sea, and the shallow waters of the Mar Menor for almost twenty kilometers. If this walk through some of the most relaxing corners of Europe doesn’t relieve your rheumatism, I don’t know what will!

Features of Las Charcas in San Pedro del Pinatar

Las Charcas in San Pedro del Pinatar

The salty waters of the Mar Menor are warmer than those of the Mediterranean Sea and are perfect for swimming during the summer and even in other seasons. Summer days feel like paradise, especially when we have our feet in the salt water, which is incredibly beneficial for our health.

Mud. Las Charcas mud ranges between 7.12 and 8.45, which is considered alkaline. It means that it is very beneficial for harmful conditions. It is composed of clay and silt deposits, providing a detoxifying effect by absorbing toxins from the peripheral system of connective tissue.

Clay deposits contain positive ions, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and fluoride, as well as negative ions, chlorine, and sulfate. These are combined with extraordinarily fine sand to create a unique healing mud.

Some Activities to Do in San Pedro del Pinatar

Four flamengos in the Mer Menor in San Pedro del Pinatar

Now, let’s mention a little piece of advice you should consider when visiting Las Charcas, San Pedro del Pinatar, and the surroundings. Here are other activities you can carry out during your stay in this tourist city.

  • The beaches near the area (both on the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea). Most of the beaches in La Manga are incredible to relax and live the summer experience. Playa Chica, a few kilometers to the south, is an option worth mentioning.
  • Port. It may seem that visiting the port is not the best idea for a summer day, but this part of the city has a lot of charisma and charm. Furthermore, it is completely free, and we can witness the Mediterranean Sea in all its splendor.
  • Bars and restaurants. Most visits to the city end with a refreshing drink in the area’s bars or restaurants. Two of the most popular are the Los Molinos Restaurant and the Paloma Buffet Grill Restaurant, located a few meters from the mud baths. There, we can enjoy a good Mediterranean dish, mainly seafood, fish, rice, etc.
  • Walk through the salt mines. The Murcian land is full of salt mines. Visiting the city is a good opportunity to walk through the Las Salinas salt mines, which are relaxing.
  • The beautiful views of La Manga. La Manga is an incredible stretch of sand with restaurants, hotels, beautiful beaches, and some of the best waters in Spain. Previously, in this article, I told you about the incredible beaches in the area, but La Manga also offers spectacular views that we should not miss.
  • The flamingos. Since the Mar Menor has shallow waters (it is more of a flood than a true lagoon), it is the natural habitat of flamingos, which we can see from the shore. The locals are proud of these magnificent birds! Ask them!

Often overshadowed by more frequented destinations, this hidden gem offers a serene retreat where the azure waves of the Mediterranean gently kiss golden sands. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a local explorer, Playa Negrete promises a peaceful beach experience away from the hustle and bustle of crowded tourist spots. Join us as we unveil the enchanting allure of Playa El Negrete, a treasure waiting to be discovered in the heart of Spain’s beloved coastline.

Table of Contents

Geographical Characteristics of Playa El Negrete

Playa El Negrete is located on the southeastern coast of Spain, within the autonomous community of Murcia. It lies in the scenic area of Cabo de Palos, a small peninsula known for its striking lighthouse and rugged coastline. The beach can be accessed via a short, unpaved road that branches off the RM-12 road, leading directly to a small parking area. From there, a brief walk along a well-trodden path takes you to the shores of Playa Negrete.

Physical Features

The beach stretches approximately 300 meters long and varies in width from 20 to 50 meters, depending on the tide. The sands of Playa El Negrete are wonderful and golden, contrasting beautifully with the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. The beach is bordered by natural cliffs and Mediterranean scrubland, which enhances its secluded feel and provides a habitat for local wildlife.

Atmosphere

On my last visit, I first noticed the peaceful atmosphere of Playa El Negrete. The beach’s remote location tends to deter large crowds, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a quiet day by the sea. The sound of the waves and the occasional call of a seagull enhance its natural, untouched character. This is starkly different from the bustling beaches of nearby La Manga, where the sound of music and chatter is more common.

Water Quality and Marine Life

The waters at Playa El Negrete are crystal clear, offering excellent conditions for snorkeling and swimming. During a snorkeling session, I was delighted to see various marine life, including schools of small fish that darted around the rocks. The cleanliness of the water is impeccable, largely due to the beach’s protected status and the absence of nearby commercial activity.

Sunset and Scenery

One of the most mesmerizing experiences at Playa Negrete is watching the sunset. The sun dips directly into the sea, painting the horizon with hues of orange and pink. This natural spectacle, combined with the rugged outline of the surrounding cliffs and the soft rustle of the sea breeze through the shrubs, creates a truly magical evening atmosphere.

Through these distinct geographical characteristics, Playa El Negrete offers a unique beach experience that is both enriching and deeply calming. Its untouched natural beauty makes it a place to visit and a destination to be cherished.

Location and Relevance of Playa El Negrete

Though primarily known for its natural beauty, the area around Playa El Negrete and Cabo de Palos has a rich maritime history. The iconic Cabo de Palos lighthouse, operational since 1865, is a testament to the region’s historical importance in marine navigation. This area has been a critical point for ships navigating the hazardous waters around the Iberian Peninsula, and the lighthouse continues to be a symbol of guidance and safety. The historical aura of the area adds a layer of depth to visits, enriching the experience of those who appreciate both natural and historical contexts.

Environmental Importance

The geographical setting of Playa El Negrete contributes significantly to its environmental relevance. The beach is part of a larger ecological network that includes marine reserves and protected areas. This network helps preserve the Mediterranean’s diverse marine ecosystems, which are crucial for maintaining the region’s biodiversity. The clear waters and healthy marine life around Playa El Negrete indicate successful conservation efforts and make the beach a crucial component of these environmental initiatives.

Cultural Impact

Culturally, playa El Negrete plays a significant role in the lifestyle of local communities. For many residents of Cabo de Palos and nearby towns, the beach serves a place of recreation, relaxation, and connection with nature. Seasonal festivities and informal gatherings at the beach strengthen community bonds and showcase the laid-back, Mediterranean way of life that is characteristic of the region.

Tourism and Economic Contributions

Touristically, while Playa El Negrete is more understated compared to other beaches in Murcia, its unspoiled charm attracts a niche market of eco-tourists and nature lovers; this, in turn, supports local businesses such as small-scale tourism operators, dive centers, and local artisans. The economic contributions of these activities, though less extensive than in major tourist hubs, are vital for the sustainable development of the local community.

The location and relevance of Playa El Negrete extend beyond its geographical coordinates. Its proximity to significant attractions, historical and environmental importance, cultural impact, and contribution to local tourism paint a picture of a beach that is integral to both the natural and cultural landscape of Murcia. This makes Playa El Negrete not just a place to visit but a crucial part of the regional tapestry.

Exploring Cabo de Palos

Cabo de Palos is a captivating coastal village that serves as a gateway to the Calblanque Natural Park and is 11 kilometers away from Playa El Negrete. Known for its quaint streets, traditional Spanish architecture, and relaxed seaside atmosphere, Cabo de Palos is a favorite among locals and visitors. The village’s heart is its marina, where colorful fishing boats bob in the water, and visitors can indulge in fresh seafood caught daily by the local fishermen.

The Iconic Lighthouse

Its iconic lighthouse dominates Cabo de Palos is landscape, standing on a rocky promontory at the peninsula’s tip. Constructed in the 19th century, the lighthouse is a pivotal navigation aid and a historic monument. It offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, making it a popular spot for photographers and sunset watchers. Although the lighthouse is not open to the public for interior tours, the surrounding area is accessible and provides spectacular vistas.

Culinary Delights

The gastronomy in Cabo de Palos is heavily influenced by its maritime environment. Local restaurants and tapas bars along the waterfront offer a taste of regional flavors, where seafood is a staple. Dishes like “Caldero” (a traditional fisherman’s rice and fish stew) reflect the culinary traditions passed down through generations. The Sunday market in Cabo de Palos is another culinary highlight where locals and tourists flock to sample local produce, artisan cheeses, and other delicacies.

Festivals such as the Feast of the Virgin del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen, feature processions, boat parades, and fireworks, illustrating the area’s deep cultural heritage and community spirit. These events provide a glimpse into the traditional Spanish festive spirit and are an excellent way for visitors to immerse themselves in local culture.

But if you’re looking for something a little different and exciting, scuba diving in Cartagena might be the perfect pick for you. The diving experience lets you explore the beauties of the sea and connect with the sea life that lives in the reef around the beach.

Several options around Cartagena can surely catch the attention of both beginner and advanced divers looking for a thriving experience. If this is the kind of adventure you’re looking for, you came to the right place.

Here, we will show you everything you need to have a fantastic experience while exploring the sea bream and all the other species you’ll find while diving or snorkeling. Make sure to look at each aspect to see what to expect and the main aspects you need to know before packing your things and enjoying what this unforgettable experience offers.

Table of Contents

Why Scuba Diving in Spain

image of a person underwater using a swimsuit and looking at a ship wreck

Several places in the world offer scuba diving as one of the main attractions. But why choose Spain as your next destination?

Along with being one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, Cartagena offers an enormous sea biodiversity, and you can find tons of interesting species as you swim through the shore or at maximum depth. While diving, you can find moray eels, seahorses, sea bream, and all kinds of fish.

Moreover, the peninsula boasts beautiful landscapes that will stay in your memories forever. Every island has its own beauties and surprises that will make you want to spend the entire day underwater.

It’s the perfect place for all kinds of dives and surely a great experience for you to enjoy alone, with your family, or with anyone else. Grab your swimsuit and explore all the mysteries the sea has to offer.

What You Need to Know Before Diving

image of two divers talking to each other

We will show you the main aspects and details you need to know to organize your scuba diving experience. Make sure to take a look at all the items below to ensure you have the best time possible when visiting Cartagena.

The place has a lot to discover and is perfect for diving and numerous other activities. Here’s everything you need to know for the best experience possible:

Great for Beginners and Professionals

image of a person snorkling and observing fish underwater

One of the reasons why Cartagena is such a great place for diving is because it features activities for all levels and skills. Whether you have never swum before and seek a more relaxed experience with comfortable routes and chilling adventures, or you’re a professional diver with open water certification, the place has everything for you.

Diving in maximum depth and swimming through the wreck of an old ship are just some of the possibilities you can sign up for when visiting the site. Some of the activities require a previous level of experience and courses for you to sign up for, so make sure to get informed about these details.

But don’t worry, even if you don’t have previous experience. Most of the options are available to all people. You can swim with octopuses, explore smaller wreck dives, and do other fun things without taking any special courses before.

Another aspect to pay attention to is age. If you’re traveling with kids, pay attention to age restrictions before signing up for any dive or boat ride. Some scuba diving sites require a minimum age of 18 to sign up for the adventures and they don’t allow underage people to participate in the dives, even with their parents. However, there are selected diving centers that allow both kids and adults to do the activities together.

Make sure to visit the company’s website to get informed about this before traveling. Cartagena has several diving sites and most of the ones that I visited allowed both adults and teenagers to participate.

Water Temperature

image of a professional swimmer underwater

One of the main aspects people are curious about before diving into the depths of the sea is the water temperature. This is another reason Cartagena is so loved by divers of all kinds, especially beginners.

According to SeaTemperature, the month where the water temperature is the hottest is August, with an average temperature of 25.6°C (78.1°F), while February is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 14.4°C (57.9°F).

The water is very comfortable to stay in for long periods, mainly thanks to its warm temperature compared to other European countries. It’s not the warmest in the world, especially when compared to other continents like South and Central America, but it will surely please you.

It gets even warmer when considering the suit you’ll be wearing, so don’t worry too much about this aspect. The deeper you explore, the colder it gets, so if you’re a beginner, it is improbable that the temperature will bother you.

The waters of Cartagena are great for all kinds of activities and will provide you with a great experience. Whether you leave the sea after a quick swim or continue in the water for the entire day, the sun’s rays will keep you warm and comfortable, but don’t forget the sunscreen.

Crystal Visibility

picture of a person underwater swimming with a fish

Some diving sites worldwide have poor visibility, where you can see only bubbles and nothing else around you. This is definitely not the case for Cartagena, as the water is crystal clear and allows you to easily see all the crabs and other creatures around you as you dive.

The sea is also not as sandy as in other places, which contributes to better conditions for exploring every spot of the site.

Since the water is very clear in Cartagena, sunlight illuminates everything you see, even when exploring the depths. Of course, this can drastically vary depending on the city you’re diving, but Cartagena has a lot of light to help guide you through the seas, whether you’re looking for fish, wrecks, or anything else around the island.

It is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited, and the visibility underwater was perfect. I’ll definitely come back more times to enjoy this unforgettable experience. I highly recommend visiting the islands around it not only to observe the incredible marine life but also to see some of the best landscapes of your life.

But if you plan on opening your eyes underwater, make sure to wear proper equipment. The water is very salty and will burn your eyes if you don’t use swimming goggles.

Much More to Do

Don’t think that diving is the only thing you’ll do when looking for a place to do this activity. Most options offer a complete tour throughout different parts of the place. You’ll dive, visit islands, and learn about the region’s biodiversity, among other things.

Also, what makes Murcia, especially Cartagena, so fun is that there’s an infinite number of options to choose from. After scuba diving, you can also visit museums, take a walk in the sand of the numerous beaches of the region, explore nature and its numerous protected reserves, and do many other things.

I spent three hours doing scuba diving and boat activities and during the rest of the day, explored the urban area of Murcia which has tons of museums and interesting places to visit. Whether you want to chill on the beach or look for a culture-rich vacation, the place has everything you need.

It’s the best destination for the next time you visit Spain. Diving on a sunny day is always recommended, not only because the water temperature is much better but also because the underwater visibility improves.

Make sure to save a sunny day for this, while almost every other activity can be done in all kinds of weather, so you don’t have to worry about that. The weather is usually very stable, with numerous sunny days perfect for all kinds of activities, especially during the high season.

Pay Close Attention to Rules and Instructions

image of two people exploring the bottom of the sea

Scuba diving is one of the best activities to do in Cartagena, but it can be dangerous. Always listen to the instructor to ensure a safe experience that will stay on your mind forever.

From types of fish you shouldn’t touch to areas you are not supposed to explore, there are several things to pay attention to and rules you should follow both on the ground and underwater. This is the most essential part of diving safely, and ignoring it can cause problems for both you and the region’s biodiversity. If you love nature and everything the sea offers, following these instructions is the best way to preserve them and have a good experience around these beautiful creatures you won’t find anywhere else.

Where to Go for Scuba Diving in Cartagena

image of a woman scuba diving

When visiting Cartagena, there are numerous great dive spots to explore. It’s crucial to choose a reputable establishment with experienced professionals who can assist you in case of any incidents during your dive.

There are numerous options to choose from, with different diving sites. Here, we will show you some of the main options that have certified divers and capable professionals who are ready to help divers with all kinds of experiences and of all ages:

  • Diving Center Hesperides
  • Yobuceo Cartagena
  • The Blue Jump Ecodiving
  • Scuba Murcia
  • Adventure Divers & Activity Center

Notice that some of these locations offer more than just Scuba Diving. It is always a good idea to visit their website to check details like the days they’re open and the activities they offer.

Bajo De Fuera: An Underwater Paradise To Scuba Diving

Diving offers a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Beneath the surface lies a whole new world to discover, brimming with astonishing shapes, colors, and textures. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in the marine paradise that’s often depicted in films and photographs, but nothing compares to experiencing it firsthand.

One of the most fascinating regions for scuba diving lovers looking to dive in Europe is the coast of Cabo de Palos, located in Murcia, a city in southeastern Spain. There are countless areas and regions where the activity can be carried out in the region, for all types of professionalism levels in the sport, from amateurs to experienced divers.

In this article, we will explore “Bajo de Fuera,” one of the most attractive diving sites in the region, due to its wonderful geographical features, rich marine life, and historic shipwrecks.

Table of Contents

Understand The Region

Bajo de Fuera is located in one of the best-protected areas in Spain and around the world: the Marine Reserve of Hormigas Islands, in Cabo de Palos.

Cabo de Palos

Cabo de Palos is located between La Manga del Mar Menor and the Spanish city of Cartagena. With a history of human habitation dating back thousands of years, this place continues to attract tourists, many of whom are attracted by its numerous diving centers. Its coastal location, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor, is one of its main attractions, offering a variety of beaches ranging from small rocky coves to long stretches of golden sand, all bathed by the clear, warm waters of the central Mediterranean.

Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve

About two nautical miles off the coast of Cartagena, in front of Cabo Palos, there is a group of small islands called Hormigas, the largest of which is 200 meters long and 13 meters high.

Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve is the region between the islands and Cabo de Palos. The reserve covers a total area of 1,898 hectares and is a marine biodiversity protection zone.

The Marine Reserve is comprised of a series of underwater mountains and diverse shoals, each reaching different depths near the surface. Within this reserve lie numerous archaeological sites, formed by a combination of sandbars and extensive shallow areas surrounding the islands. Over centuries, these sites evolved due to intense maritime traffic passing near the islands.

Due to its volcanic composition, the reserve area gains recognition as the best place to dive in the Mediterranean. It contains numerous caves, cuts, and holes that create an ideal habitat for a wide range of marine life in the surrounding waters. The currents that reach the region and the Posidonia meadow that surrounds it contribute to making it one of the most biodiverse areas in the Mediterranean, offering divers a unique experience of underwater exploration.

Diving Conditions In The Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve

The area is ideal to dive in all seasons because it has excellent temperatures throughout the year, ranging from 14ºC in winter to 25ºC in summer.

Divers will enjoy a comfortable and safe experience with exceptional visibility and warm waters. I visited the region in August, during the summer, and I can say that the adventure was amazing!

The Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve area has “Bajos,” which are submarine mountains with different surfaces and depths. In the marine reserve there are 6 Bajos: Bajo de la Testa, Bajo de Piles 1 and 2, Bajo de Dentro, Bajo de la Morra, and finally Bajo de Fuera (or Piedra del Vapor) – considered one of the most attractive dive sites in the reserve.

Bajo De Fuera: A Beautiful Dive Site

The Bajo de Fuera’s reef system is famous for its wreck diving and the historical and environmental richness it offers. Considered one of the best dives in the Mediterranean, it unites the stunning protected marine life of the Islas Hormigas Reserve and the remains of contemporary wrecks from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The north face has a gentler slope, gradually descending to the sandy seafloor.

This unique topography creates a diverse and challenging location for divers, offering opportunities to explore caves, crevices, and a wide variety of marine life around this impressive rock formation.

Marine Life

Bajo de Fuera ha a great marine life such as sea bass, barracuda, moray eels, octopus, sunfish,

In this diving site, it is possible to witness various types of marine life such as sea bass, barracuda, moray eels, octopus, sunfish, salema porgy, conger eels, eagle rays, damselfish fish, hermit crabs, nudibranchs, groupers, snapper, eels, eagles, sea fans, gorgonians, barracudas, and many other fish species.

Maybe you will be lucky enough (unfortunately, I wasn’t) to have the thrill of finding Amberjacks. There are reports of encounters with some reaching 1 meter in length.

Wreck Diving

The underwater landscape of this marine pinnacle is a silent wreck museum, where shipwrecks rest amidst the currents. In times past, this area was a busy corridor, witnessing the fate of several vessels.

Among the wreckage, the Nord America is notable, an Italian ship laden with iron ingots, which sank in 1883. The Minerva, a few years later in 1899, crashed onto the rocks during a storm. However, the most notorious shipwreck is the Sirio. This majestic Italian ocean liner, carrying nearly 1,000 immigrants bound for the United States, plunged into the depths on August 4, 1906, resulting in the loss of nearly 500 lives.

The feeling of diving up to 40 meters deep and witnessing the history preserved in the shipwrecks was truly unique.

Certification Needed

Cabo de Palos: diving in the Hormigas Islands Marine Reserve.

The site has robust protection, and the authorities control the number of dives allowed. The access is more restricted due to the intense protection zone, allowing only a limited number of divers per day – 13 during the mid/low season and 30 in the high season.

Being a less accessible location with strong currents, it is required that the divers possess at least an advanced open water certification and demonstrate competence in certain fundamental skills in deep diving.

If you don’t have the necessary certification (like I didn’t), you can talk to diving center instructors to take the courses and steps necessary for the documents that the area needs.

In my case, in addition to the documents that are already required for any dive (medical insurance, diver certificate, etc.), I needed to do some other dives to reach the minimum number required. I recommend contacting the diving centers to obtain more detailed information, as it may change over time. Getting certified in deep dive certainly took time and effort, but the rewards are worth every minute invested.

Finding Dive Centers

The area of Cabo de Palos has a lot of diving centers.
