Playa Del Barco Perdido is one of the most famous beaches in the La Manga region, located in the province of Murcia, Spain. This beach combines natural beauty, modern amenities, and a relaxing atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for tourists and locals.

It was definitely one of the beaches I liked the most in the region when I visited it. In this article, we will explore its features and the various leisure and gastronomic options the region offers.

Understand The Region

Many people get confused about what La Manga del Mar Menor is and how it works.

La Manga is located southeast of the Iberian Peninsula in the Region of Murcia. It is a strip of coastline 21 km long and between 100 and 1200 meters wide, stretching from Cabo de Palos to the Salinas Natural Park in San Pedro del Pinatar.

La Manga is a popular destination for tourists looking for diverse beaches and clear waters. The beaches facing the Mar Menor offer calm, shallow, and warm waters, ideal for families and quiet water sports. The beaches facing the Mediterranean Sea have slightly stronger waves and are perfect for activities such as surfing and sailing.

Playa Del Barco Perdido

The Playa del Barco Perdido lies in the southernmost stretch of sand on the Mediterranean shore of La Manga del Mar.

Description

The beach is located within the jurisdiction of the Cartagena municipality and is so long that it is divided into three different sections. Due to its grandeur, it is divided into 3 “sectors” (each one with around 1800 meters of width): Playa de las Sirenas, Playa Entremares, and Playa Zeus. Each of these sections offers a unique experience for visitors:

  • Playa Entremares: It is the busiest and most popular at the entrance to La Manga.
  • Playa de las Sirenas: This section is known for its tranquility and clear waters, ideal for families and those seeking a quieter environment. In this section, the reason for the beach’s name lies in a shipwreck measuring almost 40 m long, just a few meters from the coast.
  • Playa Zeus: The southernmost section is less crowded and perfect for those seeking a little more privacy. It runs down to the border with the Gola de Marchamalo, the southernmost of the channels that permit the course of water between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean.

Climate

The climate in La Manga is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures can range between 25°C and 35°C, while winter temperatures rarely drop below 10°C. The region receives a significant amount of sunshine throughout the year, making it a popular holiday destination all year round. I was there in the middle of summer, and the weather was hot (but pleasant) every day. There were a few days when it rained in the late afternoon, but it was a very quick shower and a bit refreshing.

Amenities

As this is a very busy area, especially in summer, the three sections are very well structured in terms of services, having even received a Q Quality award in recognition of the services offered. There are three lifeguard stations spread across the beaches and three different Civil Protection points that offer medical and bathing assistance to the disabled.

Facilities on the sand include foot showers, sun loungers rentals, water sports equipment rentals such as jet skis, wooden walkways on the beach, bins, recycling collection points, and a children’s play area. Visitors can also count on a lifeguard and a first aid point manned in summer.

Accessibility

The La Manga area is very inclusive and accessible. At Playa Del Barco Perdido (and at almost all the other beaches), parking spaces are reserved for people with reduced mobility, and access for these bathers is clearly signposted.

On the beach itself, there is a dedicated module for people with disabilities that provides adapted toilets, changing rooms, and shade, and an amphibious bathing chair is also available for use, with the assistance of volunteers from Civil Protection.

Where To Eat Nearby Playa Del Barco Perdido

Eating out at Playa Del Barco Perdido is very easy. The La Manga region has many restaurants and bars for all tastes and budgets. There are options on the beach itself, mainly Chiringuitos (kisoques). One that I really liked was Chiringuito Odesa Beach. Some of them offer, in addition to food and drinks, services such as chairs and umbrellas for customers who choose to eat on-site.

You can also find restaurants like El Parador del Mar Menor, Maloca, and Bonobo Playa. These restaurants are popular with tourists and are famous in the region as they have many positive online reviews. They offer Mediterranean dishes, Spanish cuisine, and seafood.

Bonobo Playa, in particular, is on Playa Del Barco Perdido (The other listed above, you might need a way of locomotion to get to). The restaurant is incredible, with a friendly, knowledgeable staff and good food. But the best of all, without a doubt, is eating with a view of this incredible beach!

Another option, next to Bonoboo, is Surfing. I want to highlight their cocktails, each one better than the last. This restaurant is also famous in the region and has many positive reviews online.

In addition to enjoying Playa Del Barco Perdido, the La Manga region is well-known for its many leisure options. Some of the options include:

Club Nautico La Isleta is a popular destination (and very close to Playa Del Barco Perdido) for water sports enthusiasts. The club offers various services for visitors, including sailing, windsurfing, and paddle surfing. In addition, it has modern facilities such as a marina, restaurant, and leisure areas, providing a complete and enjoyable experience for the whole family.

Exploring the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean via boat trips is a fantastic way to appreciate the region’s natural beauty.
