It may be a pure whim of nature – or simply the result of the uncontrollable force of volcanoes. It doesn’t matter. The long, narrow strip of sand appeared right before a beautiful cove bathed by the Mediterranean. This formed a natural pool, the largest saltwater pool in Europe, known as the Mar Menor.
The strip stretches for almost 22 km, dividing the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor. This atypical geographical position creates a sequence of beaches that flank both sides of the strip; together, they provide a variety of coastal phenomena. La Manga is famous for its calm, warm waters on one side while experiencing strong, foamy waves on the other. This dualistic dynamic has made it a sought-after location for many water-related ventures.
Playa Cavanna: Features and Infrastructure
The urban beach of Playa Cavanna stretches for 1200 metres in length and 30 metres in width and is frequented by a large number of people, particularly in the summer period. The beach is closely surrounded by a variety of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops, ensuring that all essential amenities are easily accessible and facilitating a convenient and enjoyable stay.

The average temperature during the summer varies between 25°C and 35°C, with water temperatures that can reach a pleasant 25°C. Of all the beaches I visited in the region, this one had one of the most complete Chiringuitos (beach kiosks). Many people stay there because it offers a wide variety of food and drinks, tables and chairs on the sand, and exceptional service!
But, away from the sand, the area has many other restaurant options. Some of the restaurants I visited that are close to Playa Cavanna are Bamboo Restaurant and St. Gregory’s Restaurante A La Brasa, both specializing in grilled meats. In the evenings, my family and I often opted to eat wonderful pizzas at Pizzeria Rembrandt.
The region really has food options for all tastes and budgets!
What To Do Nearby Playa Cavanna
Sitting on the beach, looking at the sea, jumping in every now and then, and having a nice drink while getting a tan is my vibe! However, I was with my family, and they are more energetic than me, so we had to look for other things to do in the area. It wasn’t difficult, the area has plenty to do. Here are some of the ones I liked the most:
Manga Surf
Manga Surf is a water sports school in Playa Cavanna.
They offer a variety of surfing activities adapted to all skill levels. You can take lessons or simply rent equipment. The sports they cover are: catamaran sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, canoeing and paddle boarding.
Isla del Ciervo
Isla del Ciervo is a small and charming island in the Mar Menor. It is a popular destination for hiking and boating, offering trails that provide panoramic views of the lagoon and coastline. The island is an excellent spot for bird-watching and for those looking for a peaceful escape in nature.
La Manga Club
This option is for those looking for a combination of luxury and leisure activities (and golf!). This spa resort offers a wide range of facilities, including golf courses, sports courts, swimming pools, and a full spa. There is also a hotel inside the club, for people who want to stay there.
Cabo de Palos
At a mere distance of 2 km, Cabo de Palos emerges as a picturesque coastal town kissing the Mediterranean Sea; it extends along one side to an untainted coastline leading towards Cartagena. It boasts fame for its marine reserve, historic lighthouse (an ideal spot for cool photos), and favorable conditions for diving exploration. It was here that I undertook my diving lessons, finally culminating in my maiden dive—an experience beyond words!

To access to the beach is very easy.
By car
- From Murcia: Take the AP-7 towards Cartagena. Take exit 800 for La Manga and follow Gran Vía de La Manga until you reach Playa Cavanna.
- From Cartagena: Take the CT-32 towards the AP-7 and follow the same directions as above.
By Bus
The closest stop to Playa Cavanna is Plaza de Bohemia – Cart
- Bus from Murcia: Take the LATBUS intercity bus from Murcia Bus Station to La Manga del Mar Menor. The most common line is number 70, which operates regularly.
- Bus from Cartagena: From Cartagena Bus Station, take a direct bus to La Manga del Mar Menor, such as ALSA lines. These buses stop at various locations throughout La Manga, including stops near Playa Cavanna.
Rent a car: Several car rental companies are available in the area, including at the airport.
Taxi or Private Transfer: Taxi and private transfer services are available in the area.
